I work on a few different things
Building + Applying Technology
At FrontlineSMS, we build messaging systems for public services and humanitarian responses. Our award-winning tools support users in 175+ countries, reaching millions of people with life-saving information and service access. Building technology that has to work in the hardest, least-regulated, lowest-margin environments gives our tools and team face-first experience with the most challenging technology and equity problems.
Designing Governance
It’s neither obvious, nor easy, to design the technical, organizational, and legal elements necessary to govern digital rights. At Digital Public, we work with communities, governments, and companies to design and implement equitable digital governance design. We’ve designed policy, supported litigation, and built legal data governance infrastructure in a range of contexts. I help organizations from the WHO to Mozilla to Meedan realize their values in the way they treat data and digital rights.
Growing Rights + Community
Our articulation of digital rights is still early days - and it’s going to take a lot of organizing to build a community capable of realizing them. I try to help design and implement actions that increase the rights available to public interest groups. And help people with the skills, access, and support to use digital transformation to build a systemic approach to equitable, digital rights. I am helping build those rights, as a researcher and advocate, and that community, as the organizer of the Data Governance Design Conference, and a few other things.
